OPHTHALMOLOGY UNIT

Unit Description

Ophthalmology is the unit under the department of surgery that deals with diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. 

This unit is led by Dr. Annamary Stanslaus, the Medical Specialist and Ophthalmologist. The unit consists of six (6) skilled staff of the following cadres:

Medical Specialists (Ophthalmologist) - 2,

Optometrists - 2,

Ophthalmic nurse - 1                      

The unit is divided into 2 subunits which are working together. These are:

• Ophthalmology: dealing with eye pathology and
• Optometry that is responsible for refraction

The unit has eye clinic which operates from Monday to Friday and services start at 9:00am to 3.30pm. Service provided during clinic hours are:

• Refraction with glass prescription
• Intramuscular pressure measurement
• Anterior segment examination with slit lamp (SLE)
• Pupilary dilatation and Fundascopy.

Unit also performs some surgeries especially eyelid. Other surgeries done included: chalazion excision, eyelid repairs, eyelid mass excision, BTRP etc.

The unit is looking forward for introduction of intra ocular surgeries such as cataract surgery upon arrival of operating instruments.

In terms of daily performance of the unit, 25 patients are attended per day, 125 patients per week and about 500 patients in a month.
