Introduction
Obstetrics and Gynecology department deals with women reproductive health issues. It provides both outpatients and inpatients services. This department is headed by skilled Medical Specialist Dr. Fatma Lijohi (MD, MMED). The department provides four categories of services namely:
- Labor & Delivery including CEmONC services
- Postnatal
- Antenatal and RCH
- Sexual Reproductive and Adolescent Health
The department is divided into two major units which Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Obstetric unit is responsible for conditions associated with labor & delivery, post-delivery and pregnancy related cases. Obstetric unit services are provided at maternity block that includes antenatal ward, Labor ward, Highly dependency unit ie eclampsia ward, postnatal wards, Kangaroo Mother Care ward and Postnatal ward.
Gynecology unit which deals with clients with gynecological cases. Services provided are outpatient clinic and inpatients eg Comprehensive post abortion care, menstruation irregularities, uterine fibroids, Cervical Cancer, anemia in pregnancy etc
Categories of patients served by department are:
Public referred clients
Private /self-referral clients
The department is among the Temeke RRH departments with high work load; it conducts 35 – 45 deliveries per day and 13,000 deliveries per year.
In terms of consultations about 5,000 outpatient cases in a year are performed. Referrals received per year amounted to 2400 for labor and delivery services.
Services in the department are provided by skilled health care providers of different cadres. Total number of staff is 89 as follows:
Medical Specialist - 1
Medical Doctors - 9
Assistant Medical Officers - 3
Nursing Officers - 6
Assistant Nursing Officers - 30
Enrolled Nurses - 32
Medical Attendants - 8
